{"id":51269,"date":"2020-02-21T15:33:30","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T20:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51269"},"modified":"2020-02-21T15:33:34","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T20:33:34","slug":"federal-privacy-office-acted-like-rbcs-pr-arm-says-integrity-advocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51269","title":{"rendered":"Federal Privacy Office Acted Like RBC\u2019s PR Arm, Says Integrity Advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2020\/02\/20\/FOI-RBC-Investigation\/\">Federal Privacy Office Acted Like RBC\u2019s PR Arm, Says Integrity Advocate<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FOI reveals watchdog pushed media to change headline on story about investigation into bank.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/11\/26\/Daniel-Therrien-privacy-commissioner.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel-Therrien-privacy-commissioner.jpg\"\/><figcaption>After various media outlets reported that federal Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien had told MPs that his office was investigating Facebook and RBC over possible misuse of personal data, the bank pushed back.&nbsp;Photo by Sean Kilpatrick, the Canadian Press.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s privacy watchdog moved to have news reports about its investigation of RBC and Facebook changed after the bank complained they were \u201cproblematic,\u201d documents released under freedom of information legislation show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tyee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/02\/08\/RBC-Facebook-Private-Messages-Investigation\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;last February that Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien had told MPs that his office was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/42-1\/ETHI\/meeting-133\/evidence\">investigating<\/a>&nbsp;both Facebook and RBC over possible misuse of personal data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe received complaints from individuals on whether or not the Royal Bank was violating PIPEDA [Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act] in some way in receiving information in that way,\u201d Therrien told the parliamentary Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo that question is the subject of a separate investigation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tyee story was followed up by Bloomberg News reporter Doug Alexander, and the service distributed a report headlined \u201cRBC Faces Canadian Privacy Investigation over Facebook Access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBC quickly complained to the privacy commissioner\u2019s office about the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Bloomberg headline is problematic from RBC\u2019s perspective,\u201d said the OPC [Office of the Privacy Commissioner]\u2019s Valerie Lawton, manager of strategic communications, in an email to 11 high-ranking employees, one of a flurry of emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawton said she had contacted Bloomberg. \u201cHopefully they will update based on my email,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email to Bloomberg, Lawton pressed for a change to the story. \u201cThe headline on the story (i.e. RBC faces investigation) is not correct, can you please revise?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federal Privacy Office Acted Like RBC\u2019s PR Arm, Says Integrity Advocate FOI reveals watchdog pushed media to change headline on story about investigation into bank.
