Global warming was blamed for evaporating the Great Lakes, now blamed for high water levels in Chicago’s ‘climate emergency’ – Updated 2<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we are seeing in global warming is the evaporation of our Great Lakes.\u201d That was Illinois Senator Dick Durbin<\/a> in 2013 when Lake Michigan was at a record low. You can find plenty of claims to the same effect from the time. Nobel Prize winner Al Gore chimed in<\/a> around then, too, saying climate change was driving Great Lakes levels down by causing evaporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that was then and this is now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s causing today\u2019s record high levels? Climate change, naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now, citing \u201ccatastrophic lakefront erosion\u201d from high water, Chicago just declared a climate emergency<\/a>. It\u2019s radical, and is reproduced in full below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Durbin want the federal government to help <\/a>Chicago pay for damage to its shoreline. Lightfoot\u2019s accompanying statement is reproduced below. You\u2019ll be relieved to see that she\u2019s putting \u201cequity\u201d at the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that Lightfoot hasn\u2019t exactly been friendly to President Trump, you might be concerned about what reception her request for federal help will get. Per the Chicago Tribune<\/a>, Lightfoot acknowledged \u201csome concern, of course,\u201d that President Donald Trump won\u2019t see the urgency in sending help to Chicago \u2014 a city he has treated as a public antagonist for years \u2014 to combat climate change, an issue he hasn\u2019t deemed a high priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why, yes, I\u2019d have some concern, too, of course. She called Trump\u2019s visit to Chicago \u201cinsulting, ignorant buffoonery.\u201d Not that he\u2019s vindictive or anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And since sustainability is emphasized in Lightfoot\u2019s statement, I\u2019d also have some concern about sustainability of claims about the causes of Great Lakes water fluctuations. I confess to being old enough to remember exceptionally high lake levels in the late 1970s when global cooling was blamed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
