The letter summarises why the IPCC\u2019s carbon budgets for a<em>\u00a0\u201clikely\u201d<\/em>\u00a0chance of\u00a0<em>not exceeding<\/em>\u00a0the international community\u2019s 2\u00b0C commitment, requires the EU to reduce the emissions from its energy system by 80% by 2030, with complete decarbonisation just a few years later.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>A pdf is available at:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kevinanderson.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Letter-to-the-PM-DECC-about-the-EC-40%-emission-target-Oct-20144.pdf\">Letter to the PM &amp; DECC about the EU\u2019s emission target.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>**************<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Letter to:<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>The Prime Minister\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Secretary of State at the Department of Energy &amp; Climate Change<br \/>\n<\/strong>22<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0October 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>RE:\u00a0<\/strong>The EU 2030 decarbonisation target and the framework\u00a0for climate and energy policies<\/p>\n<p>Dear Prime Minister and Secretary of State,<\/p>\n<p>I wish to state my grave concern about the proposed\u00a0<em>\u20182030 framework for climate and energy policies<\/em>\u2019 that is to be finalised at this week\u2019s European Council meeting of heads of state and senior ministers. If the 40% target proposed in the earlier Green Paper [1] is adopted, the EU will be signalling its dismissal of the IPCC\u2019s carbon budgets associated with a 2\u00b0C rise in global temperature.
