{"id":51086,"date":"2020-02-10T21:09:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51086"},"modified":"2020-02-10T21:09:18","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:09:18","slug":"chinese-firms-ask-for-billions-in-loans-amid-virus-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51086","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Firms Ask For Billions In Loans Amid Virus Outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/chinese-firms-ask-billions-loans-amid-virus-outbreak\">Chinese Firms Ask For Billions In Loans Amid Virus Outbreak\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the economic paralysis brought about by the coronavirus, Chinese banks are offering billions of dollars in loans to Chinese companies, according to two banking sources via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-health-lending-exclusive\/exclusive-hundreds-of-chinese-firms-seek-billions-in-loans-amid-coronavirus-outbreak-sources-idUSKBN204182\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 300 Chinese firms, including top food delivery company Meituan Dianping and smartphone maker Xiaomi, have requested upwards 57.2 billion yuan ($8.2 billion)&nbsp;in loans to prevent a hard landing as China&#8217;s economy grinds to a halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sources said the firms seeking loans are either the hardest hit or have an active role in the control of the virus outbreak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evercore ISI Chairman Ed Hyman warned last week that China&#8217;s GDP growth could post &#8220;zero for the first quarter &#8230; China is really slowing and that&#8217;s worrying people for sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are so solid,&#8221; Hyman said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not the virus, it&#8217;s the trade that matters. People are not going out. They are not shopping, and that&#8217;s what&#8217;s hurting particularly China.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/expect-cascading-global-impact-coronavirus-causes-massive-manufacturing-disruptions\">scale of disruption in China is already staggering<\/a>&nbsp;and is already spreading worldwide&#8230; and fast,&nbsp;China is effectively shut down and goods are now stranded in floating quarantines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/economics\/coronavirus-will-whack-2-global-gdp-growth-q1-goldman\">Goldman noted here<\/a>, the overall impact on global growth is about a 2% cut in Q1&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2020-02-09_3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Extended factory closings and supply chain disruptions have forced many companies to request loans for &#8220;fast-track approvals and preferential rates,&#8221; the sources said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sources reviewed several lists of companies that Chinese banks will be distributing loans to.
