{"id":50910,"date":"2020-02-03T07:41:55","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T12:41:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50910"},"modified":"2020-02-03T07:42:01","modified_gmt":"2020-02-03T12:42:01","slug":"40-privacy-groups-warn-that-facial-recognition-is-threatening-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50910","title":{"rendered":"40 Privacy Groups Warn That Facial Recognition is Threatening Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/2020\/01\/40-privacy-groups-warn-that-facial-recognition-is-threatening-democracy.html\">40 Privacy Groups Warn That Facial Recognition is Threatening Democracy<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must take action and guard what little privacy remains before it&#8217;s too late.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/facial-recognition-threatening-democracy.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TMU<\/a>)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;On Monday, forty organizations signed a letter calling on an independent government watchdog to recommend a ban on U.S. government use of facial recognition technology.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epic.org\/privacy\/facerecognition\/PCLOB-Letter-FRT-Suspension.pdf\">l<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/epic.org\/privacy\/facerecognition\/PCLOB-Letter-FRT-Suspension.pdf\">etter was drafted<\/a>&nbsp;by the digital privacy advocacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and signed by organizations including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Color of Change, Fight for the Future, Popular Resistance, and the Consumer Federation of America. The letter calls on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) to \u201c<em>recommend to the President and the Secretary of Homeland Security the suspension of facial recognition systems, pending further review.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PCLOB was originally created in 2004, as an independent agency that advises the administration on privacy issues. \u201c<em>The Congress specifically found that new surveillance powers \u2018calls for an enhanced system of checks and balances to protect the precious liberties that are vital to our way of life and to ensure that the Government uses its powers for the purposes for which the powers were given\u2019<\/em>,\u201d the letter states.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organizations challenge the PCLOB to \u201c<em>examine the more significant public concerns about the use of facial recognition in public spaces.<\/em>\u201d They also call on the board to address concerns that&nbsp;<strong>facial recognition software can be used by \u201c<em>authoritarian governments to control minority populations and limit dissent could spread quickly to democratic societies.<\/em>\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter from EPIC mentions a recent\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/18\/technology\/clearview-privacy-facial-recognition.html\">\u00a0investigation<\/a>\u00a0of a facial recognition service used by more than 600 law enforcement agencies across the country.\u00a0 As the<em>\u00a0Mind Unleashed<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/2020\/01\/chicago-police-facial-recognition-program-billions-photos-facebook.html\">recently reported<\/a>, Manhattan-based Clearview AI is collecting data from unsuspecting social media users and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) is using the controversial facial recognition tool to pinpoint the identity of unknown suspects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>40 Privacy Groups Warn That Facial Recognition is Threatening Democracy We must take action and guard what little privacy remains before it&#8217;s too late.\u00a0 (TMU)&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;On Monday, forty organizations signed a letter calling on an independent government watchdog to recommend a ban on U.S. government use of facial recognition technology.
