{"id":50842,"date":"2020-01-30T19:38:37","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T00:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50842"},"modified":"2020-01-30T19:38:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T00:38:41","slug":"chicago-police-are-using-a-facial-recognition-program-that-scans-billions-of-facebook-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50842","title":{"rendered":"Chicago Police Are Using a Facial Recognition Program That Scans Billions of Facebook Photos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/2020\/01\/chicago-police-facial-recognition-program-billions-photos-facebook.html\">Chicago Police Are Using a Facial Recognition Program That Scans Billions of Facebook Photos<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The end of privacy as we know it?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/chicago-police-facial-recognition-program-billions-photos-facebook.png\" alt=\"Chicago Police Facial Recognition Billions Photos Facebook\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/\">TMU<\/a>)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Manhattan-based Clearview AI is collecting data from unsuspecting social media users and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) is using the controversial facial recognition tool to pinpoint the identity of unknown suspects, reads a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/crime\/2020\/1\/29\/21080729\/clearview-ai-facial-recognition-chicago-police-cpd\">report<\/a>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/clearview-app-lets-strangers-find-your-name-info-with-snap-of-a-photo-report-says\/\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;a bombshell&nbsp;<em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/18\/technology\/clearview-privacy-facial-recognition.html\">report<\/a>, it is also being used by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The software\u2019s creator, Hoan Ton-That, maintains that it is purely \u201c<em>an after-the-fact research tool for law enforcement, not a surveillance system or a consumer application<\/em>.\u201d However, privacy advocates are saying this technology is so intrusive and ripe for abuse its use should be immediately halted. And earlier this month, a lawsuit was filed in federal court seeking to do just that.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chicago attorney Scott Drury who filed the lawsuit describes CPD\u2019s signing of a two-year, $49,875 contract with Illinois tech firm CDW Government to use Clearview AI\u2019s software as \u201c<em>frightening<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi explains:<strong>Get the latest from The Mind Unleashed in your inbox.&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/signup.themindunleashed.com\/subscribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sign up right here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c<em>Our obligation is to find those individuals that hurt other people and bring them to justice.
