That&#8217;s when the country and its information systems will be&nbsp;<strong>intentionally disconnected from the worldwide web<\/strong>, according to Russia&#8217;s communications ministry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia aims to&nbsp;ready its own web&nbsp;to both&nbsp;<strong>survive a global internet shutdown and defend against foreign cyber-attacks<\/strong>&nbsp;and intrusion on its data infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The test is based on the recently passed\u00a0\u201csovereign internet\u201d bill into Russian law, which requires \u201call communications operators, messengers and email providers [to]\u00a0participate in the tests, as well as state-run institutions and security services,\u201d according to a summary of the law by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-russia-putin-internet\/russia-plans-sovereign-internet-tests-to-combat-external-threats-idUSKBN1YN23Z?il=0\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/kremlinfile.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Getty images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially it means&nbsp;all Russian internet traffic will be routed to&nbsp;exchange points approved&nbsp;by the&nbsp;Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor), Russia&#8217;s&nbsp;federal executive body responsible for censorship in media and telecommunications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These hubs will&nbsp;filter traffic in such a way that data sent between Russians internet&nbsp;users should work seamlessly,&nbsp;<strong>simultaneously rejecting any communication with foreign computers<\/strong>.&nbsp;The test will evaluate \u201cthe possibility of intercepting subscriber traffic and revealing information about the subscriber, blocking communication services,\u201d according to an internal government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/admin.govexec.com\/media\/2_5465427183595947281.pdf\">document<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the ministry noted it shouldn&#8217;t significantly impact regular individual internet users and is to take place in stages on Dec. 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Putin actually addressed the &#8216;sovereign internet&#8217; initiative this week at his annual year-end press conference, saying in response to a journalist&#8217;s question, &#8220;Free Internet and sovereign Internet \u2014\u00a0these notions do not contradict each other.&#8221; He was responding to criticism from activist groups which say it&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>a dramatic and dangerous step toward complete\u00a0government censorship and total information control<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia&#8217;s &#8220;Sovereign Internet&#8221; Test Will Cut Off Entire Country From\u00a0Web On Monday On Monday a key initiative&nbsp;undertaken by the Russian government for over the past year to establish a &#8216;sovereign internet&#8217; will face a major test.
