{"id":50233,"date":"2019-12-20T09:03:30","date_gmt":"2019-12-20T14:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50233"},"modified":"2019-12-20T09:03:35","modified_gmt":"2019-12-20T14:03:35","slug":"alarming-nyt-op-ed-reveals-disturbing-secretive-surveillance-state-powered-by-your-phones-location-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50233","title":{"rendered":"Alarming NYT Op-Ed Reveals &#8220;Disturbing&#8221; Secretive Surveillance State Powered By Your Phone&#8217;s Location Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/alarming-nyt-op-ed-reveals-disturbing-secretive-surveillance-state-powered-your-phones\">Alarming NYT Op-Ed Reveals &#8220;Disturbing&#8221; Secretive Surveillance State Powered By Your Phone&#8217;s Location Services<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Millions of Americans are walking around with phones that have, unknowingly, created one of the most disturbing and unintentional &#8220;surveillance states&#8221; to ever exist.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A explosive new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/12\/19\/opinion\/location-tracking-cell-phone.html\">opinion piece<\/a>&nbsp;in the NY Times aims to demonstrate that&nbsp;<strong>detailed smartphone tracking is far more ubiquitous than many think<\/strong>, despite the ongoing claims by companies that people&#8217;s data is &#8220;anonymous&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Ohm, a law professor and privacy researcher at the Georgetown University Law Center, said that&nbsp;<strong>describing location data as anonymous is &#8220;a completely false claim&nbsp;that has been debunked in multiple studies.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: &#8220;Really precise, longitudinal geolocation information is absolutely impossible to anonymize.\u00a0D.N.A. is probably the only thing that\u2019s harder to anonymize than precise geolocation information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/gc.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The op-ed looked at trying to identify people in positions of power. It identified and tracked &#8220;scores&#8221; of notable people, like military officials with security clearances, as they drove home at night. They also tracked law enforcement officials and high powered lawyers. Though they didn&#8217;t name any of the people, they followed them on private jets, vacations and taking their kids to school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Despite some of the data pointing to &#8220;scandal and crime&#8221;, the purpose of tracking them was to\u00a0document the risk of under-regulated surveillance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/1111_1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One person identified was Mary Millben, a singer based in Virginia who has performed for three Presidents. When told her phone was putting her &#8220;on the map&#8221; for everyone to see, she said:&nbsp;\u201cTo know that you have a list of places I have been, and my phone is connected to that, that\u2019s scary. What\u2019s the business of a company benefiting off of knowing where I am?
