The 25th annual United Nations climate change summit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2019\/dec\/02\/climate-crisis-what-is-cop-and-can-it-save-the-world\">is now underway<\/a>\u2014and for the sake of the planet, it\u2019s high time it changed its approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While climate scientists, policymakers and environmental campaigners have been engaged in a decades-long conversation about the future of the planet, most people on planet Earth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5418690\/why-ignore-climate-change-warnings-un-report\/\">see no climate emergency<\/a>. Put bluntly, the science of global warming has failed spectacularly to emotionally connect with much of society, particularly those in the most powerful positions\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/climate-scientist-our-profession-is-letting-down-humanity-we-must-change-the-way-we-approach-the-climate-crisis-122479\">rendering policy makers ineffective<\/a>\u00a0despite repeated warnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The science and the warnings focus on curtailing the emission of heat-absorbing gases into the atmosphere that, left unaddressed, may threaten the viability of contemporary society and worsen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-a-mass-extinction-and-are-we-in-one-now-122535\">a mass extinction event already in motion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these warnings are not connected with complex human systems, such as food, finance and logistics, leaving them to evolve as if climate change didn\u2019t exist. Terms such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-climate-tipping-points-are-and-how-they-could-suddenly-change-our-planet-49405\">\u201ctipping points\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;are on their own technical, distant and abstract, while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/melissa-chu\/why-your-brain-prioritizes-instant-gratification-o.html\">humans are wired&nbsp;<\/a>to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/10\/why-people-arent-motivated-to-address-climate-change\">prioritise the short-term<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This failure to connect the dots means humanity has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/mar\/21\/carbon-emission-release-rate-unprecedented-in-past-66m-years\">rapidly entered uncharted territory<\/a>, pumping out carbon ten times faster than at any point since the extinction of the dinosaurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our climate is like reckless banking before the crash\u2014it\u2019s time to talk about near-term collapse Our food, finance, and logistics systems are worryingly vulnerable to climate shocks, Aled Jones and Will Steffen write.
