{"id":50067,"date":"2019-12-11T08:31:26","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T13:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50067"},"modified":"2019-12-11T08:31:32","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T13:31:32","slug":"these-secretive-oil-companies-control-3-trillion-in-wealth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=50067","title":{"rendered":"These Secretive Oil Companies Control $3 Trillion In Wealth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/These-Secretive-Oil-Companies-Control-3-Trillion-In-Wealth.html\">These Secretive Oil Companies Control $3 Trillion In Wealth<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/article\/718x300\/4335706c8fe6715db089553755d39db5.jpg\" alt=\"Kashagan\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They control the vast majority of the world\u2019s oil and gas assets, yet the average person has never even heard of them, outside of those that are famous for things like getting attacked by missiles or becoming embroiled in a high-profile corruption scandal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State-owned oil and gas companies (aka, the national oil companies, or NOCs) control at least US$3 trillion in oil and gas assets, compared to around $2.5 trillion as of 2017, and hold an estimated 90% of all known reserves&#8211;considerably more than publicly listed companies such as&nbsp;<strong>BP<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>ExxonMobil&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>Shell.&nbsp;<\/strong>Meanwhile,<strong>&nbsp;Saudi Aramco<\/strong>&nbsp;leads the pack as the world\u2019s most profitable company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means that NOCs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/The-32-Trillion-Fund-Transforming-The-Oil-Industry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">control about as much wealth<\/a>&nbsp;as all U.S. billionaires or roughly twice the assets of global multilateral development banks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/tinymce\/2019-12\/1575927411-o_1drm9fqvs1a3vh9f1p48gckbot8_large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/tinymce\/2019-12\/1575927411-o_1drm9fqvs1a3vh9f1p48gckbot8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/resourcegovernance.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/national_oil_company_database.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Source: Resourcegovernance.org<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we go by annual revenue alone, China\u2019s state-run Sinopec\u2014explorer, producer, refiner, marketer and distributor\u2014was the biggest oil and gas company in the world at the end of 2018. By net income, that title goes to Saudi Aramco, which reported net income in 2018 of $111.1 billion, compared to Sinopec\u2019s $9.1 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oilandgasiq.com\/strategy-management-and-information\/articles\/oil-and-gas-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">These numbers<\/a>&nbsp;may seem a bit wild, but no one really ever knows where they come from or how they are derived.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By annual revenue metrics, by year-end 2018, four of the top 10 oil and gas companies in the world were state-owned: Sinopec, Aramco, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Russian Gazprom. The other six Top 10 titles went to Shell (4th), BP (5th), Exxon (6th), Total (7Th) Valero (8th) and Phillips 66 (10th).&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/The-Best-And-Worst-Oil-Majors-Of-2019.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Related: The Best And Worst Oil Majors Of 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite their economic importance, most of these 71 NOCs are notoriously secretive&#8211;Norway\u2019s Equinor being one of the few exceptions.
