Rather, they are likely to worsen in the face of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/WEO\/Issues\/2019\/10\/01\/world-economic-outlook-october-2019\">slowing global economy<\/a>and little sign of causes of disaffection being addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Washington as disruptor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a word, the world is in a mess, made more threatening by the retreat of the Trump administration from America\u2019s traditional role as a stabilising force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/305778\/original\/file-20191209-90597-didnzp.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>President Donald Trump has moved the US away from its traditional role of global stabilising force.&nbsp;AAP\/EPA\/Kevin Dietsch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If anything, Washington is a disruptor in its abandonment of international agreements. These include: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a>&nbsp;on climate change and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dfat.gov.au\/trade\/agreements\/in-force\/cptpp\/pages\/comprehensive-and-progressive-agreement-for-trans-pacific-partnership.aspx\">Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership<\/a>, previously the Trans Pacific Partnership, aimed at liberalising Asia-Pacific trade. The US has also withdrawn from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/commentary\/expert-comment\/2019\/us-withdrawal-iran-deal-one-year\">Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)<\/a>&nbsp;that froze Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington\u2019s defenestration of the JCPOA and its reimposition of tough sanctions on Iran has further destabilised the world\u2019s most volatile region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this and more, including an unresolved&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-45899310\">trade conflict<\/a>&nbsp;between the US and China, virtually guarantees 2020 will stretch the sinews of a fragile global order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An evolving US-China&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2019-us-china-who-is-winning-the-tech-war\/\">technology war<\/a>&nbsp;and risks of a technological decoupling add to the gloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The world is in worse shape than during the GFC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2011\/aug\/07\/global-financial-crisis-key-stages\">Global Financial Crisis of 2007-08<\/a>\u00a0was a period of intense uncertainty as a global financial system buckled.
