Science professor calls for fewer humans to \u2018strengthen human rights\u2019<\/a> <\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Humanity must \u2018act to sustain life\u2019 by reducing fertility (voluntarily)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will there be \u201cuntold human suffering\u201d if humans do not stop having children in order to avoid a \u201cclimate emergency?\u201d More than 11,000 scientists signed a paper authored by an ecology professor at Oregon State University making that case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OSU\u2019s William Ripple and Christopher Wolf, a postdoctoral research associate at OSU (left and right, below<\/em>), were the lead authors of the paper \u201cWorld Scientists\u2019 Warning of a Climate Emergency<\/a>,\u201d published in the journal BioScience<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their call to \u201creduce the world population\u201d is among six solutions. \u201cWe need to reduce fertility rates through voluntary family planning,\u201d Ripple told The College Fix<\/em> in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper cites \u201cproven and effective policies\u201d that can help reduce the population in order to \u201cstrengthen human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They include access to family planning services for everyone, \u201cfull gender equity\u201d and giving everyone \u201cprimary and secondary education,\u201d especially women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe that prospects will be greatest if decision makers and all of humanity promptly respond to this warning and declaration of a climate emergency, and act to sustain life on planet Earth, our only home,\u201d the paper states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ripple maintains a website called<\/a> \u201cAlliance of World Scientists,\u201d where he encourages scientists to read his paper and sign his petition to show \u201cthat you generally agree with our article.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alliance has 15,000 members from 175 different countries, according to the website. While it claims to vet those who seek membership, the alliance specifically seeks \u201cscientists from any scientific discipline, including graduate students in the sciences.\u201d It makes no mention of requiring an institutional affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ripple\u2019s attempt to persuade leaders to implement his agenda stands in contrast to the approach recently favored by Ivy League students. They made themselves a nuisance at the Harvard-Yale football game, delaying it for an hour<\/a>, in order to protest climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
