“Panic Mode” Run On Lebanon’s Banks Feared After 7-Day Closure Amid Protests<\/a>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Banks across Lebanon have been shuttered now for<\/strong> a seventh consecutive day<\/strong>, with the country\u2019s banking association saying banks would remain closed Friday over “safety concerns” as massive anti-corruption protests <\/a>have brought multiple cities to a standstill, which began a week ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reuters\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that banking operations have been\u00a0“limited to paying out customer and employee salaries via ATMs”<\/strong>\u00a0in a situation which has also hit war-torn Syria, given many Syrians rely on the neighboring Lebanese banking system to hold dollars and savings following the collapse of Syria’s currency.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time addressing the protests\u00a0\u2014<\/em>\u00a0dubbed the ‘WhatsApp Revolution’ because it was initially triggered\u00a0by a government\u00a0a plan to boost state revenues with a daily tax rate on calls made\u00a0via voice over internet protocol\u00a0(VoIP), utilized by applications such as Facebook-owned WhatsApp\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/em>Lebanon\u2019s President Michel Aoun in a public speech\u00a0touted an\u00a0economic reform package proposed by the prime minister as a \u201cfirst step\u201d toward staving off economic collapse<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aoun acknowledged state corruption has \u201ceaten us to the bone\u201d <\/strong>and assured the crowds,  \u201cI am ready to meet your representatives who carry your concerns, to listen to your specific demands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also hinted at a government reshuffle potentially in the works, saying that\u00a0there was\u00a0\u201ca need to review the current government.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
