{"id":48909,"date":"2019-10-08T15:51:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T20:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=48909"},"modified":"2019-10-08T15:51:50","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T20:51:50","slug":"fbi-use-of-foreign-surveillance-tool-violated-privacy-rights-fisa-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=48909","title":{"rendered":"FBI Use Of Foreign-Surveillance Tool Violated Privacy Rights: FISA Court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/technology\/fbi-use-foreign-surveillance-tool-violated-privacy-rights-fisa-court\">FBI Use Of Foreign-Surveillance Tool Violated Privacy Rights: FISA Court<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI&#8217;s use of electronic surveillance tools&nbsp;<strong>violated the constitutional privacy rights of Americans<\/strong>&nbsp;whose communications were swept up in a controversial foreign intelligence program, according to a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/fbi%20logo_0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court concluded that the FBI had been&nbsp;<strong>improperly searching through a database of raw intelligence for information on Americans,&nbsp;<\/strong>according to the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fbis-use-of-foreign-surveillance-tool-violated-americans-privacy-rights-court-found-11570559882\">Wall Street Journa<\/a>l<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ruling, made last year, was disclosed on Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The intelligence community disclosed Tuesday that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court last year found that the FBI\u2019s pursuit of data about Americans ensnared in a warrantless internet-surveillance program intended to target foreign suspects may have violated the law authorizing the program, as well as the Constitution\u2019s Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches.<\/p><p>The court concluded that the FBI had been improperly searching a database of raw intelligence for information on Americans\u2014raising concerns about oversight of the program, which as a spy program operates in near total secrecy. &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fbis-use-of-foreign-surveillance-tool-violated-americans-privacy-rights-court-found-11570559882\">WSJ<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the FISA court,&nbsp;<strong>tens of thousands of improper searches were conducted by the Bureau in 2017 and 2018<\/strong>. They were deemed improper in part due to the involvement of data relating to&nbsp;<strong>tens of thousands of emails or phone numbers<\/strong>. Moreover,&nbsp;<strong>the<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;FBI was potentially using the intelligence information to vet personnel and cooperating sources<\/strong>. Per federal law, the database can only be searched by the FBI while seeking evidence of a crime or for foreign intelligence information.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In other cases, the court ruling reveals improper use of the database by individuals.
