Middle East Eye<\/em>\u2018s Ian Cobain has published an exclusive<\/a> titled \u201cTwitter executive for Middle East is British Army \u2018psyops\u2019 soldier\u201d, exposing the fact that Twitter\u2019s senior editorial executive for Europe, the Middle East and Africa also works for an actual, literal propaganda unit<\/a> in the British military called the 77th Brigade. Which is mighty interesting, considering the fact that Twitter constantly suspends accounts from non-empire-aligned nations<\/a> based on the allegation that they are engaging in propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe senior Twitter executive with editorial responsibility for the Middle East is also a part-time officer in the British Army\u2019s psychological warfare unit,\u201d Cobain writes. \u201cGordon MacMillan, who joined the social media company\u2019s UK office six years ago, has for several years also served with the 77th Brigade, a unit formed in 2015 in order to develop \u2018non-lethal\u2019 ways of waging war. The 77th Brigade uses social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, as well as podcasts, data analysis and audience research to wage what the head of the UK military, General Nick Carter, describes as \u2018information warfare\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacMillan\u2019s presence in a government psyops unit was not a secret; until\u00a0Middle East Eye<\/em>\u00a0began raising questions on the matter, it was\u00a0right there on his LinkedIn profile<\/a>. This is not something that anyone considering him for promotion was likely to have been unaware of. According to\u00a0his (now-edited) LinkedIn page<\/a>, MacMillan has been in his current position as Head of Editorial EMEA since July 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
