{"id":48601,"date":"2019-09-22T10:41:13","date_gmt":"2019-09-22T15:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=48601"},"modified":"2019-09-22T10:41:17","modified_gmt":"2019-09-22T15:41:17","slug":"fiat-money-cannibalization-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=48601","title":{"rendered":"Fiat Money Cannibalization in America"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/?p=54798\">Fiat Money Cannibalization in America<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/?p=54798\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An Odd Combination of Serenity and Panic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States, with untroubled ease, continued its approach toward catastrophe this week.&nbsp; The Federal Reserve cut the federal funds rate 25 basis points, thus furthering its program of mass money debasement.&nbsp; Yet, on the surface, all still remained in the superlative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2019\/09\/1-SPX-weekly.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2019\/09\/1-SPX-weekly-1024x757.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54799\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>S&amp;P 500 Index, weekly: serenely perched near all time highs, in permanently high plateau nirvana. [PT]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stocks smiled down on investors from their perch upon what Irving Fischer once called \u201ca permanently high plateau.\u201d&nbsp; As of the market close on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average held above 27,000, the S&amp;P 500 above 3,000, and the NASDAQ above 8,000.&nbsp; 401k accounts, to the delight of working stiffs of all ages, origins, and orientations, are swollen beyond expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below the surface, however, the overnight funding market was subject to much weeping and gnashing of teeth.&nbsp; Sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning the overnight repurchase agreement (repo) rate hit 10 percent.&nbsp;Short-term liquidity markets essentially broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several technical glitches, the Fed executed its first repo operation in a decade \u2013 $53 billion \u2013 to keep the interbank funding market flowing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/fed-has-lost-control-rates-again\">Zero Hedge<\/a>&nbsp;documented the chaos real time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was followed up with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/fed-begins-repo-operation-funding-rates-ease\">additional repo operations<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday and Thursday \u2013 at $75 billion a pop, and both oversubscribed.&nbsp; Perhaps Fed repo operations will be a daily occurrence, at least until the Fed launches QE4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2019\/09\/2-overnight-repo-rate.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2019\/09\/2-overnight-repo-rate.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54800\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>US overnight repo rate \u2013 as Fed chair Jerome Powell remarked: \u201c<em>Funding pressures in money markets are elevated this week<\/em>\u201d. Evidently, nothing escapes his eagle eyes.
