MPs brand fracking ‘incompatible’ with UK climate targets<\/a><\/h3>\n

Fracking should be banned because it is incompatible with the\u00a0UK<\/span>‘s climate targets, according to the cross-party House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC<\/span>).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0\u00a0committee’s report<\/a>\u00a0has been rushed out in advance of a series of parliamentary votes this afternoon on the government’s\u00a0\u00a0Infrastructure Bill<\/a>. Ten\u00a0MP<\/span>s have tabled an\u00a0\u00a0amendment<\/a>\u00a0to the bill that would ban fracking \u201cin order to reduce the risk of carbon budgets being\u00a0breached\u201d.<\/p>\n

This amendment also has cross-party support: it is backed by former Conservative environment secretary\u00a0\u00a0Caroline Spelman<\/a>\u00a0along with two other Conservatives, five Labour\u00a0MP<\/span>s and one each for the Liberal Democrats and the\u00a0Greens.<\/p>\n

The Labour Party says it will block\u00a0UK<\/span>\u00a0fracking unless the government agrees to a series of\u00a0environmental conditions<\/a>\u00a0set out in a separate amendment to the Infrastructure\u00a0Bill.<\/p>\n

The committee report and parliamentary votes come at a crucial time for the nascent\u00a0UK<\/span>\u00a0shale gas industry. It is hoping to resume exploration activities, which have been on hold since causing earth tremors in\u00a02011.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0\u00a0Lancashire council’s planning department<\/a>\u00a0said exploratory fracking at two sites should not go ahead, citing concerns over noise and traffic. The council’s planning committee was due to have voted on the plans this week until developer\u00a0\u00a0Cuadrilla asked for more time<\/a>.<\/p>\n
