To say that humans have abused water is like saying the Titanic was a boating mishap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scale of this misuse is made as clear as a pellucid pool at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/belkin.ubc.ca\/\">UBC Belkin Art Gallery\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;new exhibition,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/belkin.ubc.ca\/exhibitions\/spill-exhibition\/\"><em>Spill<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think that sounds incredibly depressing, you\u2019re not wrong. But there\u2019s another element at work \u2014 the blazing fire of anger and activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Belkin curator Lorna Brown explains, the idea for the exhibition originated from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/trial-begins-for-company-vessel-charged-in-english-bay-fuel-spill-1.3819636\">diesel spill<\/a>&nbsp;in Vancouver\u2019s English Bay in 2015. The incident reminded her of Melancholy Bay, the former title of Vancouver Harbour, given by Captain George Vancouver when he first landed here in 1792.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But melancholy doesn\u2019t do justice to many of the situations documented in the show. Fury might be a better descriptor for the feeling sparked by this catalogue of human error, bad behaviour and insane decision-making presented in image, sound and installation, supported by exhaustive research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown explains that although the artists featured in&nbsp;<em>Spill<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 Carolina Caycedo, Nelly C\u00e9sar, Guadalupe Martinez, Teresa Montoya, Anne Riley, Genevieve Robertson, Susan Schuppli and T\u2019uy\u2019t\u2019tanat Cease Wyss \u2014 worked in different parts of the world, they were united by the common element of water.
