Bernie Sanders’ Plan to Phase out Nuclear Power Draws Attacks \u2014 Here’s Why They’re Wrong<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has released an ambitious climate proposal<\/a>, one which champions of the status quo were quick to criticize<\/a>. One line of attack, coming from many different sources, focuses on Sanders’ plan to phase out nuclear power, but the arguments, and who is behind them, deserve a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanders’ proposal refers to nuclear power as one of several \u201cfalse solutions\u201d to the climate crisis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo get to our goal of 100 percent sustainable energy, we will not rely on any false solutions like nuclear, geoengineering, carbon capture and sequestration, or trash incinerators.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Washington Post editorial board quickly blasted<\/a> Sanders’ plan to eliminate nuclear power: \u201cMr. Sanders also promises to make his plan unnecessarily expensive by ruling out a long-established source of carbon-free electricity: nuclear power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Times quoted Joshua Freed<\/a>, vice president for clean energy at Third Way, a think tank that describes itself as promoting \u201cmodern center-left ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Sanders plan appears to be big, but it\u2019s not serious,\u201d\u00a0Freed said. \u201cWe need to have every option on the table.\u201d\u00a0Freed\u2019s biography\u00a0on the Third Way website<\/a>\u00a0makes\u00a0clear that \u201cadvanced nuclear\u201d is a top priority for the\u00a0organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
