Uhhh&#8230;&nbsp;Photo of Amazon forest fires taken Aug. 26, 2019, by Leo Correa, AP Photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two both ask and answer their own question in the Globe and Mail piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs it acceptable that a single government can unilaterally adopt environmental policies that put millions at risk?\u201d they write. \u201cIt is urgent that the international community find ways to influence rogue states whose irresponsible policies accelerate global warming and undermine the collective effort to address the existential threat posed by climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a comfortably sanctimonious argument, especially from inside the glass house of Canadian climate policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admittedly Bolsonaro is an ogre whose popularity among Brazilians has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-26\/brazil-s-president-disapproval-rating-soars-during-amazon-fires\">plummeted<\/a>\u00a0since he was elected last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Axworthy and Rock should be careful what they wish for \u2014 if the world really was empowered to intervene when rogue states ignore the climate crisis, would we get off easily?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada was recently ranked&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/entry\/climate-change-canada-g7_ca_5d5f54f7e4b0b59d25725352\">last<\/a>&nbsp;of the G7 economies in terms of meaningful climate action \u2014 tied with the U.S. under Donald Trump. Of all the G20 countries, Canadians&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2018\/11\/14\/canada-produces-most-greenhouse-gas-emissions-than-any-other-g20-country-new-report-says.html\">produce<\/a>&nbsp;the most greenhouse gases per capita.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Justin Trudeau government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/5814784\/amazon-fires-canada-water-bombers\/\">touted<\/a>\u00a0its pledge of $15 million to fight Amazon wildfires on behalf of the planet, this represents only 0.5 per cent of the $3.3 billion in taxpayer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentaldefence.ca\/report\/the-elephant-in-the-room-canadas-fossil-fuel-subsidies\/\">subsidies<\/a>\u00a0that Canada shovels at the fossil fuel sector each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quit Chastising Brazil, Canada.
