These Harvey Weinsten-esque tactics were employed by Monsanto owner Bayer as part of a multipronged effort to discredit its critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2019.08.09neilyoung.PNG\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Carey Gillam, a Reuters journalist who was targeted by Monsanto<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2019.08.09neilyoung.PNG?itok=AIld0s_-\"><\/a>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2019\/aug\/07\/monsanto-fusion-center-journalists-roundup-neil-young\">Guardian<\/a>&nbsp;issued a lengthy report on Friday detailing Bayer&#8217;s unsavory tactics to try and beat back the thousands of lawsuits claiming that Monsanto&#8217;s signature &#8220;Roundup&#8221; weedkiller had caused cancer. Among these tactics, Monsanto even paid Google to promote search results critical of Gillam&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a rundown of the company&#8217;s tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Monsanto planned a series of &#8220;actions&#8221; to attack a book authored by Gillam prior to its release, including writing &#8220;talking points&#8221; for &#8220;third parties&#8221; to criticize the book and directing &#8220;industry and farmer customers&#8221; on how to post negative reviews.<\/li><li><strong>Monsanto paid Google to promote search results for &#8220;Monsanto Glyphosate Carey Gillam&#8221; that criticized her work.
