{"id":47518,"date":"2019-07-30T07:58:09","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T12:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47518"},"modified":"2019-07-30T07:58:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T12:58:11","slug":"massive-radiation-leak-dwarfing-fukushima-traced-to-russian-research-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47518","title":{"rendered":"Massive Radiation Leak Dwarfing Fukushima Traced To Russian Research Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-07-29\/massive-radiation-leak-dwarfing-fukushima-traced-russian-research-facility\">Massive Radiation Leak Dwarfing Fukushima\u00a0Traced To Russian Research Facility<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A massive, unexplained cloud of radiation that swept across Europe in 2017 has been traced to one of Russia&#8217;s largest nuclear facilities, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2211511-gigantic-mysterious-radiation-leak-traced-to-facility-in-russia\/\"><em>NewScientist<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/radiation%20sign.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Located between the Volga river and the Ural mountains, the leak coming from the Mayak nuclear development facility&nbsp;<strong>released up to 100 times the amount of radiation into the atmosphere&nbsp;<\/strong>as the Fukushima disaster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Italian scientists were the first to raise the alarm on 2 October, when&nbsp;<strong>they noticed a burst of the radioactive ruthenium-106 in the atmosphere<\/strong>. This was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2153998-russia-confirms-extremely-high-radiation-levels-in-toxic-cloud\/\">quickly corroborated&nbsp;<\/a>by other monitoring laboratories across Europe.<\/p><p>Georg Steinhauser at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany says&nbsp;<strong>he was \u201cstunned\u201d when he first noticed the event<\/strong>. Routine surveillance detects several radiation leaks each year, mostly of extremely low levels of radionuclides used in medicine. But this event was different.<\/p><p>\u201c<strong>The ruthenium-106 was one of a kind.
