Image source: UK Ministry of Defence\/Sky News<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Citing &#8220;safety&#8221; and &#8220;reassurance&#8221; for vessels transiting the strait,<\/strong>&nbsp;the statement added, &#8220;Freedom of navigation is crucial for the global trading system and world economy, and we will do all we can to defend it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sky News reported that&nbsp;a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate already stationed off Bahrain since April, the HMS Montrose, was&nbsp;<strong>the first warship to offer escort Thursday<\/strong>. The HMS Duncan, which is a larger &#8216;Type 45&#8217; frigate, is reportedly en route to assist the Montrose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows\u00a0UK\u00a0Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt&#8217;s Monday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/65890b80d403489c8b1b249cdc954857\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0of an initiative for a\u00a0\u201cEuropean-led maritime protection mission to support safe passage of crew and cargo\u201d\u00a0in the Persian Gulf.
