{"id":47197,"date":"2019-07-13T09:49:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-13T14:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47197"},"modified":"2019-07-13T09:49:52","modified_gmt":"2019-07-13T14:49:52","slug":"retail-apocalypse-12000-stores-are-forecasted-to-close-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47197","title":{"rendered":"Retail Apocalypse: 12,000 Stores Are Forecasted To Close This Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-07-13\/retail-apocalypse-12000-stores-are-forecasted-close-year\">Retail Apocalypse: 12,000 Stores Are Forecasted To Close This Year\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the economy cycles down through summer,&nbsp;<strong>there is new, alarming data<\/strong>&nbsp;that shows retail store closings are accelerating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coresight.com\/research\/weekly-us-and-uk-store-openings-and-closures-tracker-2019-week-28\/\">Coresight Research<\/a>&nbsp;says there have&nbsp;<strong>already been 20% more store closings announced in the first six months of 2019 than in all of 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2019-07-13_07-30-21.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The research firm examined figures and retailers&#8217; earnings reports, found that more than 7,000 are expected to close this year with many locations already shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bankrupted Payless ShoeSource closed its remaining stores last week, accounts for 37% of the closing this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coresight estimates closures could hit at least 12,000 stores by the end of 4Q19. The firm already tracked 5,864 closings in 2018, which included all Toys R Us, Kmart and Sears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The retail apocalypse reared its ugly head in 2017 when a record 8,139 store closures were reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2019-07-13_07-33-30.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a separate reported, noted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2019\/07\/03\/2019-store-closings-list-these-retailers-shuttering-locations\/1597997001\/\">USA Today,<\/a>&nbsp;UBS said 25% tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese products could jeopardize $40 billion of retail sales and puts 12,000 stores at risk of closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The market does not realize how much brick &amp; mortar retail is incrementally struggling and how new 25% tariffs could force widespread store closures,&#8221; UBS analyst Jay Sole wrote in the May report. &#8220;We think the potential 25% tariffs on Chinese imports could accelerate pressure on these company&#8217;s profit margins to the point where major store closures become a real possibility.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;ll take several months for the new round of tariffs to filter through the economy, raise retail prices, force consumers to shop online or not at all, and then lead to a new wave of closings in 1H20.
