{"id":47163,"date":"2019-07-10T17:09:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T22:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47163"},"modified":"2019-07-10T17:09:25","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T22:09:25","slug":"russian-nuclear-sub-wreck-leaking-radiation-100000-times-higher-than-normal-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=47163","title":{"rendered":"Russian Nuclear Sub Wreck Leaking Radiation 100,000 Times Higher Than Normal: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-07-10\/russian-nuclear-sub-wreck-leaking-radiation-100000-times-higher-normal-report\">Russian Nuclear Sub Wreck Leaking Radiation 100,000 Times Higher Than Normal: Report<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers in Norway have discovered radiation levels in excess of 100,000 times normal next to a Soviet-era nuclear submarine which sank in the Arctic 30 years ago &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>a reading which is&nbsp;higher than those taken 12 years ago,<\/strong>&nbsp;according to Norwegian news outlet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tv2.no\/a\/10713685\/\"><em>TV2<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/sub%20head.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kosomolets went down in the Barents Sea in 1989, killing 42 out of its crew of 69, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2019\/07\/10\/russian-nuclear-sub-wrecks-radiation-100k-higher-than-normal-scientists-say-a66341\"><em>Moscow Times<\/em><\/a>. It is sitting at a depth of 1,665 meters (5,462 ft) with a severely damaged hull from sitting on the seabed for 30 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/sub%201a.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/sub%201b.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/sub%201b.jpg?itok=oYXQULUc\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radioactivity was detected near a ventilation hole which has been observed to kick up &#8216;mysterious&#8217; dust clouds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We have observed a kind of cloud coming out of this hole once in a while. In connection with the test in which we measured pollution, a cloud came out of the hole.&nbsp;<strong>This may indicate that the pollution comes out in pulses<\/strong>, says Heldal.<\/p><p><strong>It is assumed that the ventilation hole at the top of the submarine tower is in direct contact with the reactor inside the wreck.<\/strong>&nbsp;This hole will now be monitored extra closely by the researchers the rest of the cruise, which is scheduled to be completed tomorrow. &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tv2.no\/a\/10713685\/\"><em>TV2<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HWKAfqL-F2c\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The results are preliminary. We will examine the samples thoroughly when we get home,&#8221; said Hilde Elsie Heldal of the&nbsp;Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. Heldal believes that the plumes might be caused by ocean currents, tides or other conditions related to the movement of the ocean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The samples were taken as part of a joint operation between Norway and Russia which set sail from northern Norway on Saturday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other news, Russian servicemen reportedly avoided a &#8220;planetary catastrophe&#8221; after a recent nuclear sub accident.
