Oilfield layoffs and project cancellations are raining down on the oil patch on a daily basis. Suppliers are hit too. Many energy stocks are in the process of evisceration. Energy junk bonds are in a rout.<\/p>\n<p>But consumers love it \u2013 those who aren\u2019t losing their jobs over it \u2013 because they spend less on fuel. Consumers are voters. So politicians love it because voters love it. Hence, it\u2019s good for the economy. I get that.<\/p>\n<p>These sorts of squiggles have been worming their way into national numbers. For example, Markit\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Survey\/PressRelease.mvc\/225a20ae961a4762bb0d6dcd169d53a8\">Services PMI<\/a>\u00a0for December dropped to 53.3, down for the\u00a0<em>sixth month in a row<\/em>, after having peaked in June. This was \u201cnot just a one-month wobble,\u201d the report said, as the economy \u201clost significant growth momentum at the close of the year.\u201d But it remained above 50, the dividing line between expansion and contraction.
