This news comes just months after a similar incident forced them to (supposedly) purge hundreds of millions of records captured without FISA authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/462770-nsa-caught-unauthorized-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to&nbsp;<em>RT<\/em>,<\/a>&nbsp;the government spy agency unlawfully gathered a \u201clarger than expected\u201d volume of call and text records from one United States telecom provider under the metadata-collection program known as Section 215. According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legal-document\/nsa-foia-documents-quarterly-reports-intelligence-oversight-board-nsa-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">document<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legal-document\/nsa-foia-documents-quarterly-reports-intelligence-oversight-board-nsa-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>&nbsp; (ACLU) as part of its ongoing lawsuit against the agency, the heavily redacted file does not reveal which company was affected, or how many of its \u201ccall detail records\u201d were illegally collected between October 3 and 12, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ErI0r6gZJn4\" width=\"560\" height=\"333\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>These documents further confirm that this surveillance program is beyond redemption and a privacy and civil liberties disaster,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;ACLU National Security Project staff attorney Patrick Toomey told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/462770-nsa-caught-unauthorized-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Associated Press<\/em>&nbsp;as reported by&nbsp;<em>RT.<\/em><\/a>\u201cThere is no justification for leaving this surveillance power in the NSA\u2019s hands.\u201d The NSA, unsurprisingly, in its own internal documents assessed the blunder\u2019s \u201cimpact on national security or international relations\u201d to be \u201cnone.\u201d Critics of the program, formerly known as StellarWind, have pointed to its acknowledged failure to stop a single terror event.
