{"id":46904,"date":"2019-06-25T08:59:21","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T13:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46904"},"modified":"2019-06-25T08:59:24","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T13:59:24","slug":"john-kiriakou-cia-seeking-more-impunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46904","title":{"rendered":"JOHN KIRIAKOU: CIA Seeking More Impunity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2019\/06\/24\/john-kiriakou-cia-seeking-more-impunity\/\">JOHN KIRIAKOU: CIA Seeking More Impunity<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency is trying to get a&nbsp;pass on crimes even before they\u2019re committed and it represents a threat to press freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>T<\/strong>he CIA has quietly asked the Senate Intelligence Committee to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/blogs\/secrecy\/2019\/06\/ssci-covert-agents\/\">include a provision<\/a>&nbsp;in its next authorization bill that would vastly expand the definition of a \u201ccovert agent\u201d whose identity would be protected from unauthorized disclosure.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current law, called the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1981, defines a covert agent as any intelligence officer who is serving abroad or who has served abroad in a covert capacity&nbsp;<em>in the past five years<\/em>.&nbsp; The new bill would expand that protection to include all unacknowledged intelligence personnel even if they have never left the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me be clear:&nbsp; This measure is not at all about protecting the identities of CIA officers doing their jobs.&nbsp; It is about protecting those CIA employees who have committed crimes against humanity.&nbsp;It\u2019s a cover-up.&nbsp; Take it from me.&nbsp; I have first-hand experience with this law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/5416043433_c892e0167a_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37858\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency\u2019s headquarters.&nbsp;(Central Intelligence Agency via Flickr)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Intelligence Identities Protection Act\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intelligence_Identities_Protection_Act#cite_note-25\">IIPA<\/a>) has been used only twice since its passage.\u00a0It was used to convict Sharon Scranage, a CIA secretary who had had an affair with an intelligence officer in Ghana and had given him the names of all CIA employees in the country and the identities of Ghanaians who were working for the CIA.\u00a0 She was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in a minimum-security prison.\u00a0 My prosecution was the second and it came in retaliation for my blowing the whistle on the CIA\u2019s torture program.\u00a0 I never made public the name of any covert operative and I ended up with 23 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JOHN KIRIAKOU: CIA Seeking More Impunity The agency is trying to get a&nbsp;pass on crimes even before they\u2019re committed and it represents a threat to press freedom.
