Register to attend or tune-in digitally&nbsp;<\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/events.globallandscapesforum.org\/bonn-2019\/register\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1979, celebrated author Joan Didion began her essay collection&nbsp;<em>The White Album<\/em>&nbsp;with the famously potent line: \u201cWe tell ourselves stories in order to live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forty years later, this elusive human truth might well be the most important sentence for ensuring the future of humanity in an every-warming world.RELATED STORIES<a href=\"https:\/\/news.globallandscapesforum.org\/36671\/were-creating-a-gold-standard-for-rights-but-why\/\">We\u2019re creating a \u2018gold standard\u2019 for rights \u2013 but why?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll the world\u2019s main scientists are lined up,\u201d says climate psychologist George Marshall. \u201cWe have this amazing amount of material, we can see with our own eyes and experiences that something weird is happening out there. People accept the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd yet they don\u2019t believe in it. It doesn\u2019t seem to affect them in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The antidote, he wrote in his 2014 book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/uk\/dont-even-think-about-it-9781620401330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don\u2019t Even Think About it: Why Our Brains are Wired to Ignore Climate Change<\/a><\/em>, is not more research, facts and dire outlooks. Rather, what the world needs is narrative. Communication. Stories about the future that cast each listener as a protagonist, whose values and most cherished parts of life are put up to the ball of fire in the sky to be illuminated in full \u2013 and burn, if kept there unprotected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facts about climate change have never been bleaker. In the past year, hundreds of scientists worldwide have pooled their research to tell that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.globallandscapesforum.org\/34874\/were-on-the-brink-of-massive-extinction-landmark-biodiversity-report-says\/\">1 million species are at risk of extinction<\/a>. If global warming isn\u2019t\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.globallandscapesforum.org\/30274\/fateful-effects-of-climate-change-could-come-sooner-than-expected-says-ipcc\/\" target=\"_blank\">limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius<\/a>\u00a0by 2040, then 99 percent of coral reefs could die, and 50 percent of people could be living under water stress. Globally,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/world-lost-belgium-sized-area-primary-rainforests-last-year\" target=\"_blank\">a Belgium-sized area<\/a>\u00a0of primary forest was lost in 2018, and carbon dioxide emissions\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/08\/climate\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-increase.html\" target=\"_blank\">rose by 3.4 percent<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S., the world\u2019s second-highest emitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Survival stories: How do we write our own?
