Instead, lawmakers often try to conceal public records from the people who own them \u2014 that is, you and&nbsp;me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public records laws exist to allow us to see into the decision-making of our government. When bureaucrats make efforts to obscure our view into their actions, it serves only to undermine government officials\u2019&nbsp;accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also diminishes the public\u2019s understanding of, and faith in,&nbsp;democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Making What\u2019s Public a\u00a0Secret<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2015\/05\/09\/massachusetts-public-financial-disclosure-forms-are-not-public\/M2Kf2aLzt9Azc1zT3b6edO\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In Massachusetts<\/a>, lawmakers are making it harder for the public to see elected officials\u2019 financial disclosure&nbsp;statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/undark.org\/article\/battle-public-records-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In California<\/a>, the legislature has been considering the shuttering of records that could reveal misconduct or conflicts of interest in publicly funded&nbsp;research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/without-debate-state-senate-approves-open-records-bill-that-keeps-many-lawmakers-records-closed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington state lawmakers<\/a>&nbsp;rushed through a bill that allowed them to hide lawmakers\u2019 calendars and email exchanges with lobbyists. Only after public outrage erupted over the move did the governor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/deadline-nears-for-gov-inslee-to-veto-or-let-stand-legislatures-public-records-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">veto the measure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most efforts to hide public records aren\u2019t as&nbsp;brazen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here in Oregon, our once-robust disclosure law, passed in 1973, is now pockmarked with more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doj.state.or.us\/oregon-department-of-justice\/public-records\/public-records-and-meetings-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">500 exemptions<\/a>, many chiseled by bureaucrats wishing to avoid scrutiny or lobbyists seeking to protect their&nbsp;clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oregon officials can conceal investigative evidence of wrongdoing by medical professionals \u2014 not just doctors but also dentists, veterinarians and undertakers. Basic information about birth, marriage and deaths is locked away. The pest-extermination industry won\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.invw.org\/2017\/06\/30\/oregons-bedbug-secrecy-law-who-are-we-protecting\/\" target=\"_blank\">a special exemption<\/a>\u00a0to keep secret information about bedbug infestations.
