{"id":4645,"date":"2015-01-19T20:36:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T01:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4645"},"modified":"2015-01-19T20:36:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T01:36:00","slug":"social-cost-of-carbon-drastically-underestimated-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=4645","title":{"rendered":"Social Cost Of Carbon Drastically Underestimated: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/01\/19\/social-cost-carbon-drastically-underestimated-report\" target=\"_blank\">Social Cost Of Carbon Drastically Underestimated: Report<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0government could be drastically underestimating how much climate change is going to cost us, according to a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nclimate2481.html\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>\u00a0published by Stanford researchers in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature Climate Change<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded that the Obama Administration is using a Social Cost of Carbon estimate that may be just one-sixth of the true cost\u2014and that the true cost is high enough to justify aggressive measures for lowering emissions enough to limit global temperature rise to the 2 degrees Celsius that scientists tell us is the threshold for averting catastrophic climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The Social Cost of Carbon is an official estimate of how much economic damage will be caused per metric ton of carbon emitted into our atmosphere\u2014damages like lower crop yields and higher healthcare costs. It is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climatechange\/EPAactivities\/economics\/scc.html\" target=\"_blank\">used by the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0and other federal agencies<\/a>\u00a0to calculate the benefits of policies intended to improve energy efficiency, lower emissions, and combat climate change.
