{"id":46231,"date":"2019-05-19T06:54:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T11:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46231"},"modified":"2019-05-19T06:54:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-19T11:54:23","slug":"that-time-john-bolton-said-its-good-to-lie-about-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46231","title":{"rendered":"That Time John Bolton Said It\u2019s Good To Lie About War"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/2019\/05\/16\/that-time-john-bolton-said-its-good-to-lie-about-war\/\">That Time John Bolton Said It\u2019s Good To Lie About\u00a0War<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/medium-3.png?fit=800%2C363&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalist Whitney Webb recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_whitneywebb\/status\/1128354536417107970\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;a 2010 video clip I\u2019d never seen before featuring US National Security Advisor John Bolton defending the use of deception in advancing military agendas, which highlights something we should all be paying attention to as Trump administration foreign policy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@caityjohnstone\/i-am-not-a-fan-of-americas-46th-president-24ba75f9ca42\">becomes increasingly Boltonized<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a December 2010 episode of Fox News\u2019&nbsp;<em>Freedom Watch<\/em>, Bolton and the show\u2019s host Andrew Napolitano were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/therightscoop.com\/the-great-debate-bolton-vs-napolitano-on-wikileaks\/\">debating about recent WikiLeaks publications<\/a>, and naturally the subject of government secrecy came up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow I want to make the case for secrecy in government when it comes to the conduct of national security affairs, and possibly for deception where that\u2019s appropriate,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MbVtROU9J_E\">Bolton said<\/a>. \u201cYou know Winston Churchill said during World War Two that in wartime truth is so important it should be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo you really believe that?\u201d asked an incredulous Napolitano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Bolton replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou would lie in order to preserve the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I had to say something I knew was false to protect American national security, I would do it,\u201d Bolton answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1060\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MbVtROU9J_E?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re often faced with that difficulty, but would I lie about where the D-Day invasion was going to take place to deceive the Germans, you\u2019d better believe it,\u201d Bolton continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy do people in the government think that the laws of society or the rules don\u2019t apply to them?\u201d Napolitano asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause they are not dealing in the civil society we live in under the Constitution,\u201d Bolton replied. \u201cThey are dealing in the anarchic environment internationally where different rules apply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut you took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and the Constitution mandates certain openness and certain fairness,\u201d Napolitano protested. \u201cYou\u2019re willing to do away with that in order to attain a temporary military goal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That Time John Bolton Said It\u2019s Good To Lie About\u00a0War Journalist Whitney Webb recently&nbsp;tweeted&nbsp;a 2010 video clip I\u2019d never seen before featuring US National Security Advisor John Bolton defending the use of deception in advancing military agendas, which highlights something we should all be paying attention to as Trump administration foreign policy&nbsp;becomes increasingly Boltonized.
