How A Sustainable Food System Is\u00a0Built<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We all eat food. Most of us every day. Most of us several times a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food is undoubtedly one of the most constant and impactful aspects of our lives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And the ways that we produce\u200a\u2014\u200aand<\/em> <\/strong>consume it\u2014\u200aare impactful as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all know about climate change<\/strong>. Agricultural activities (crop, livestock and fossil fuel) contribute approximately 25%<\/a> of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions\u200a\u2014\u200ayet around 1\/3 of all food is wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15%<\/a> of the world\u2019s land surface area has been degraded <\/strong>by soil erosion and physical and chemical degradation, while even more is at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industrial agriculture is using more and more toxic<\/strong><\/a> chemicals<\/strong> to control weeds and pests, which put the environment<\/a>, agricultural workers and consumers at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers now <\/strong>earn less<\/strong> in every dollar<\/a> that we spend on food, despite rising costs of living, as big companies squeeze (and squeeze<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rural communities are collapsing<\/strong>, the quality and diversity<\/strong><\/a> of food that we produce (and thus eat) is constantly decreasing, neoliberal policies<\/strong><\/a> have seen small farmers displaced coupled with a rapid rise in the rate of rural-urban migration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rural poor<\/strong> are poorer than ever before, food security issues<\/a> are rife and malnutrition is one the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, both producers and consumers<\/a> are disenchanted and dissatisfied <\/strong>with the current state of the industry and the way it\u2019s structured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, many aspects of the way that we produce and consume food is not sustainable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something (i.e. a lot of things<\/strong>) needs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainable Agriculture Isn\u2019t Simple<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s necessary. Very necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defining Sustainable Agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
