{"id":46119,"date":"2019-05-14T07:38:38","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T12:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46119"},"modified":"2019-05-14T07:38:41","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T12:38:41","slug":"on-climate-does-trudeaus-canada-play-hero-or-villain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46119","title":{"rendered":"On Climate, Does Trudeau\u2019s Canada Play Hero or Villain?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/05\/13\/On-Climate-Canada-Hero-Or-Villain\/\">On Climate, Does Trudeau\u2019s Canada Play Hero or Villain?<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Tyee asked global experts, and got some surprising answers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/05\/12\/PolarBearsSnow.jpg\" alt=\"PolarBearsSnow.jpg\"\/><figcaption>Canada\u2019s symbolic role globally outweighs its actual emissions impact, say experts, who call Trudeau\u2019s carbon tax \u2018courageous.\u2019 Still, it\u2019s not enough to meet emissions pledges, upping the ante for the federal election.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How does Canada rate in fighting climate change?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better than most countries, especially ones where fossil fuels drive politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terribly for the world, because if every country copied Canada, that would ensure climate catastrophe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the complicated picture climate policy experts in Canada and abroad shared with The Tyee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said Canada, while still far from where it needs to be in lowering its greenhouse gas emissions, is enacting \u201ccourageous\u201d and \u201cinteresting\u201d policies that are pushing global progress forward at a time when the opportunity for action is rapidly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Opinion\/2019\/04\/02\/Climate-Report-Wake-Up\/\">fading<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the surface this doesn\u2019t seem to make much sense, given that under Trudeau\u2019s Liberal government Canada is set to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/15\/opinion\/canada-climate-carbon-tax-elections.html?smid=tw-nytopinion&amp;smtyp=cur\">miss<\/a>\u00a0the 2030 climate targets it agreed to at Paris, spends billions of dollars propping up the oil and gas industry (despite promising to end fossil fuel subsidies), and last year nationalized Kinder Morgan\u2019s Trans Mountain pipeline for $4.5 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/rem\/people\/profiles\/jaccard.html\">Mark Jaccard<\/a>, a professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Vancouver\u2019s Simon Fraser University who has contributed to assessments from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-finally-canada-is-global-example-for-climate-action\/\">says<\/a>&nbsp;that Canada\u2019s record on climate change is more complex and productive than most people realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems to me people get so focussed on the Trans Mountain pipeline as a symbol that the federal government has failed on climate policy, without paying attention to the actual policies and comparing them to the rest of the world,\u201d he told The Tyee. \u201cWhen you do that, we\u2019re among the leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Climate, Does Trudeau\u2019s Canada Play Hero or Villain?
