{"id":46114,"date":"2019-05-14T07:29:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T12:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46114"},"modified":"2019-05-14T07:29:06","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T12:29:06","slug":"the-mysterious-sabotage-of-saudi-oil-tankers-a-dangerous-moment-in-trumps-escalating-conflict-with-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=46114","title":{"rendered":"The Mysterious \u201cSabotage\u201d of Saudi Oil Tankers: a Dangerous Moment in Trump\u2019s Escalating Conflict With Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2019\/05\/14\/the-mysterious-sabotage-of-saudi-oil-tankers-a-dangerous-moment-in-trumps-escalating-conflict-with-iran\/\">The Mysterious \u201cSabotage\u201d of Saudi Oil Tankers: a Dangerous Moment in Trump\u2019s Escalating Conflict With Iran<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/SaudiArabia\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>\u2019s claim that two of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/oil\">oil<\/a>&nbsp;tankers have been sabotaged off the coast of the UAE is vague in detail \u2013 but&nbsp;could&nbsp;create a crisis that spins out of control and into military action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any attack on shipping in or close to the Strait of Hormuz, the 30-mile wide channel at the entrance to the Gulf, is always serious because it is the most important choke point for the international oil trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;significant armed action by the US or its allies against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Iran\">Iran<\/a>&nbsp;would&nbsp;likely provoke Iranian retaliation in the Gulf and elsewhere in the region. Although the US is militarily superior to Iran by a wide margin, the Iranians as a last resort could fire rockets or otherwise attack Saudi and UAE oil facilities. Such apocalyptic events are unlikely \u2013&nbsp;but powerful figures in Washington, such as the national security adviser&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/john-bolton\">John Bolton<\/a>&nbsp;and secretary of state&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mike-pompeo\">Mike Pompeo<\/a>, appear prepared to take the risk of a war breaking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolton has long publicly demanded the overthrow of the Iranian government. \u201cThe declared policy of the United States should be the overthrow of the mullahs\u2019 regime in Tehran,\u201d he said last year before taking office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe behaviour and the objectives of the regime are not going to change and, therefore, the only solution is to change the regime itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolton and Pompeo are reported to have used some mortar rounds landing near the US embassy in Baghdad in February as an excuse to get a reluctant Pentagon to prepare a list of military options against Iran.
