Trump Continues Obama\u2019s War On Whistleblowers, Arrests Another Alleged Intercept Source<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNew drone whistleblower at The Intercept,\u201d tweeted<\/a> the outspoken CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou in October 2015. \u201cFor God\u2019s sake don\u2019t let @MatthewACole learn his identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intercept<\/em> investigative reporter Matthew Cole has been tied both to<\/a> Kiriakou\u2019s discovery and prosecution and to that of Reality Winner, who leaked classified documents to The Intercept<\/em> in 2017. Kiriakou\u2019s comment came after the first in a series of articles was published in The Intercept<\/em> titled \u201cThe Drone Papers<\/a>\u201d by Jeremy Scahill on October 15, 2015. Today, the alleged source of this report has been arrested<\/a>, the third alleged Intercept<\/em> source to have been prosecuted by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former US Air Force language analyst Daniel Hale has been arrested and charged with violating the Espionage Act and other offenses related to leaking classified documents to the press. Court documents didn\u2019t reveal the identity of the journalist who received the documents, but AP reports<\/a> that \u201cdetails in the indictment make clear that Jeremy Scahill, a founding editor of The Intercept<\/em>, is the reporter who received the leaks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe source said he decided to provide these documents to The Intercept<\/em> because he believes the public has a right to understand the process by which people are placed on kill lists and ultimately assassinated on orders from the highest echelons of the U.S. government,\u201d Scahill\u2019s 2015 article reads, quoting his source as saying, \u201cThis outrageous explosion of watchlisting \u2014 of monitoring people and racking and stacking them on lists, assigning them numbers, assigning them \u2018baseball cards,\u2019 assigning them death sentences without notice, on a worldwide battlefield \u2014 it was, from the very first instance, wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe person who leaked these documents to\u00a0The Intercept<\/em>\u00a0revealed that the government classified anybody killed by U.S. drone strikes\u2014even if they weren\u2019t the target\u2014as militants, and that\u2019s how they were able to insist that civilians weren\u2019t being killed in significant numbers,\u201d\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0Reason<\/em>\u2018s Scott Shackford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
