{"id":45876,"date":"2019-05-02T08:41:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-02T13:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45876"},"modified":"2019-05-02T08:41:51","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T13:41:51","slug":"in-some-pennsylvania-pro-fracking-corners-name-calling-false-claims-and-swastika-laden-images-circulate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45876","title":{"rendered":"In Some Pennsylvania Pro-Fracking Corners, Name-calling, False Claims, and Swastika-Laden Images Circulate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2019\/05\/01\/pennsylvania-fracking-marcellus-drilling-news-jim-willis\">In Some Pennsylvania Pro-Fracking Corners, Name-calling, False Claims, and Swastika-Laden Images Circulate<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/MDN%20Doctors%20Screenshot%202.JPG?itok=kIUPb6co\" alt=\"Marcellus Drilling News screenshot of story decrying the Pennsylvania Medical Society and using a swastika graphic\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cabot Oil and Gas is a shale drilling company that, according to state regulators,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/business\/powersource\/2017\/08\/04\/Dimock-methane-Cabot-Agency-for-Toxic-Substances-Marcellus-shale-natural-gas-water-contamination\/stories\/201708030135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">botched<\/a>&nbsp;its shale gas extraction operations in an area around Carter Road in Dimock, Pennsylvania, about a decade&nbsp;ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cabot has for years fought liability for locals\u2019 contaminated water supplies and has remained in legal disputes long after reaching secret settlements with many Carter Road residents that reportedly included&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/pennsylvania\/2017\/09\/26\/last-two-dimock-families-settle-lawsuit-with-cabot-over-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">non-disclosure agreements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside a courthouse not far from Dimock, a Cabot spokesman recently claimed that people complaining about water contamination from fracking were actually paid imposters, an unsubstantiated claim quickly echoed in pro-gas&nbsp;circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not Cabot vs. three landowners. This is Cabot vs. the money that&#8217;s behind this. These are paid activists, paid actors on behalf of Food&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;Water Watch and the like,\u201d Cabot spokesman George Stark said outside court in February,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.witf.org\/news\/2019\/02\/gas-driller-backs-off-demand-to-have-pa-man-thrown-in-jail.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;the Associated&nbsp;Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a line that in the Trump era carries echoes of the \u201ccrisis actor\u201d claims tossed around by the far-right \u2014 a conspiracy theory-grade claim that equates efforts to help families left without drinkable well water with a scheme to induce people to invent evidence tying fracking to&nbsp;problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More broadly speaking, the evidence linking shale industry activity to drinking water contamination is already well established, not just by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/12\/13\/fracking-can-contaminate-drinking-water-has-made-some-water-supplies-unusable-epa-announces-long-awaited-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>, but also by the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/article\/us-settles-with-antero-over-water-pollution-from-fracking-20190211-00752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a>, state regulators (documenting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-39032748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thousands of spills<\/a>&nbsp;at fracked wells), and countless peer-reviewed scientific&nbsp;papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, Stark\u2019s claim that fracking opponents are part of some sort of scheme was picked up by a major natural gas&nbsp;PRshop and by a far-right industry news service, Marcellus Drilling News (MDN), which mixes a sizable dose of slurs, name-calling, and prejudice into the news clips it circulates to subscribers daily, and whose editor is friendly with Stark and with&nbsp;Cabot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Some Pennsylvania Pro-Fracking Corners, Name-calling, False Claims, and Swastika-Laden Images Circulate Cabot Oil and Gas is a shale drilling company that, according to state regulators,&nbsp;botched&nbsp;its shale gas extraction operations in an area around Carter Road in Dimock, Pennsylvania, about a decade&nbsp;ago.
