VIPS: Extradition of Julian Assange Threatens Us All<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Retaliation against Julian Assange over the past decade plus replicates a pattern of ruthless political retaliation against whistleblowers, in particular those who reveal truths hidden by illegal secrecy<\/a>, VIPS says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SUBJECT: <\/strong>Extradition of Julian Assange Threatens Us All<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 11, London police forcibly removed WikiLeaks <\/em>co-founder Julian Assange from the embassy of Ecuador after that country\u2019s president, Lenin Moreno, abruptly revoked his predecessor\u2019s grant of asylum<\/a>. The United States government immediately requested Assange\u2019s extradition for prosecution under a charge<\/a> of \u201cconspiracy to commit computer intrusion\u201d under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former U.S. Government officials promptly appeared in popular media offering soothing assurances that Assange\u2019s arrest threatens neither constitutional rights<\/a> nor the practice of journalism<\/a>, and major newspapers like The <\/em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> and The <\/em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> fell into line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not So Fast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others found reason for concern in the details of the indictment. Carie DeCel, a staff attorney for the Knight First Amendment Institute<\/a>, noted that the indictment goes beyond simply stating the computer intrusion charge and \u201cincludes many more allegations<\/a> that reach more broadly into typical journalistic practices, including communication with a source, encouraging a source to share information, and protecting a source.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an\u00a0analysis\u00a0of the indictment\u2019s implications, the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) observed that it includes an allegation that \u201cAssange and Manning took measures to conceal Manning as the source of the disclosure\u2026including by removing usernames from the disclosed information and deleting chat logs between Assange and Manning,\u201d and that they \u201cused a special folder on a cloud drop box of\u00a0WikiLeaks\u00a0<\/em>to transmit classified records.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
