{"id":45824,"date":"2019-05-01T06:54:21","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T11:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45824"},"modified":"2019-05-01T06:54:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T11:54:23","slug":"pompeo-threatens-military-intervention-after-maduro-declares-victory-over-attempted-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45824","title":{"rendered":"Pompeo Threatens Military Intervention After Maduro Declares Victory Over &#8216;Attempted Coup&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-05-01\/maduro-declares-victory-over-attempted-coup\">Pompeo Threatens Military Intervention After Maduro Declares Victory Over &#8216;Attempted Coup&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update (7:16 am ET):&nbsp;<\/strong>Here we go again&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the monthslong simmering rebellion against Maduro has exploded into a full-fledged uprising &#8211; one that&#8217;s in danger of being brutally suppressed by the Maduro regime &#8211; it&#8217;s time for the US to revive its threats of military intervention with the added subtext of &#8216;this time, we mean it&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After footage from yesterday&#8217;s riots showed regime tanks brutally crushing opposition supporters, Mike Pompeo appeared on Fox Business this morning and said that the US hasn&#8217;t ruled out military intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO SAYS MILITARY ACTION IN VENEZUELA IS POSSIBLE &#8216;IF THAT&#8217;S WHAT&#8217;S REQUIRED&#8217;, WOULD PREFER PEACEFUL TRANSITION -FOX BUSINESS INTERVIEW<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His comments come as supporters of the regime and opposition prepare to take to the streets for another wave of massive demonstrations on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed president Juan Guaido has called for a second day of street protests on Wednesday, but after the Venezuelan government successfully beat back the Guaido-led &#8220;popular uprising&#8221; &#8211; as the vast majority of Venezuela&#8217;s military remained loyal to Nicolas Maduro &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>it&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-04-30\/venezuela-says-its-putting-down-ongoing-armed-coup-attempt\">looks like the Russia- and China-backed socialist regime has resisted this latest challenge<\/a>&nbsp;to its rule.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coup attempt was hardly bloodless &#8211; there were horrifying incidences of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-04-30\/venezuela-says-its-putting-down-ongoing-armed-coup-attempt\">extreme violence<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; but for all the jawboning from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-04-30\/venezuela-says-its-putting-down-ongoing-armed-coup-attempt\">President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and NSA John Bolton<\/a>, it appears Guaido&#8217;s most prolific attempt yet to force Maduro from power was a spectacular failure. Some members of the military defected, but Maduro by and large retained control over the military and other levers of power.
