{"id":45281,"date":"2019-04-11T19:02:14","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T00:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45281"},"modified":"2019-04-11T19:02:17","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T00:02:17","slug":"psychologically-theyre-ill-prepared-canadian-chaos-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45281","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Psychologically, They&#8217;re Ill-Prepared&#8221; &#8211; Canadian Chaos Looms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-04-11\/psychologically-theyre-ill-prepared-canadian-chaos-looms\">&#8220;Psychologically, They&#8217;re Ill-Prepared&#8221; &#8211; Canadian Chaos Looms<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantspub.com\/resources\/commentary.cfm\"><em>Via Grant&#8217;s Almost Daily,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m your huckleberry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cU.S. hedge funds from time to time have appeared in this country over the last 10 years, with the same hypothesis of shorting Canadian banks, and it hasn\u2019t worked out very well for them,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Brian Porter, CEO of the Bank of Nova Scotia, said yesterday. \u201cThere are always going to be those that take an opposing view, and we\u2019ll prove them wrong over the long term.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel Dechaine, banking analyst at the National Bank of Canada, likewise came to his industry\u2019s defense in a note today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cA trend that is making us believe that sector&nbsp;<strong>sentiment is becoming too bearish<\/strong>&nbsp;is the re-emergence of a vocal \u2018short Canada\u2019 investment crowd.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dechaine writes that a Stanley Cup victory for the woebegone Toronto Maple Leafs (last title, 1967) is more likely than a jump in loan losses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/55bb9fc12acae711008bbe99-750-563.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/55bb9fc12acae711008bbe99-750-563.jpg?itok=ehYWYdNe\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One well-known investor is publicly taking the challenge:<\/strong>&nbsp;Steve Eisman, portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman and a protagonist in Michael Lewis\u2019 The Big Short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cCanada has not had a credit cycle in a few decades and I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a Canadian bank CEO that knows what a credit cycle really looks like,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Eisman, who is short various Canadian banks and mortgage lenders, fired back in an interview yesterday with BNN Bloomberg television.<\/p><p><strong>\u201cI just think psychologically they\u2019re extremely ill prepared.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While Canadian bank advocates and their skeptics exchange words,&nbsp;<strong>the formerly-white hot housing market is now in deep freeze.<\/strong>&nbsp;March sales in Vancouver collapsed by 31.4% year-over-year according to the local real estate board, the worst showing since 1986 and down 46% from the 10-year average for March. Prices also lurched lower, with the benchmark detached home price falling 10.5% year-over-year to C$1.44 million ($1.08 million).
