(Photo: Edilzon Gamez\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Venezuela&#8217;s worsening humanitarian crisis fueled by political unrest and economic sanctions, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence announced new sanctions targeting the government and companies that transport oil to Cuba as part of the Trump administration&#8217;s ongoing effort to oust Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing that &#8220;oil is the lifeblood&#8221; of the Venezuelan government, Pence&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/remarks-vice-president-pence-rice-universitys-baker-institute\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in Houston on Friday that the United States is sanctioning 34 vessels owned or operated by Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A.
