{"id":45142,"date":"2019-04-08T07:41:49","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T12:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45142"},"modified":"2019-04-08T07:41:53","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T12:41:53","slug":"co2-levels-pass-3-million-year-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45142","title":{"rendered":"CO2 levels pass 3-million-year record"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/co2-levels-pass-3-million-year-record\/\">CO2 levels pass 3-million-year record<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.climatenewsnetwork.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/06175446\/CO2-levels-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fossil fuel burning is pushing CO2 levels ever higher.&nbsp;<em>Image: By Tony Webster, via Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The modern world is about to pass a temperature peak dating back for millions of years \u2013 because CO2 levels have already passed an ancient record.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>LONDON, 8 April, 2019 \u2013<\/em>&nbsp;German scientists have confirmed, once again, that carbon dioxide is reaching concentrations unprecedented on any human time scale, with CO2 levels in the atmosphere already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2019-04\/pifc-mct040319.php\">higher than they have been for at least three million years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And their computer simulations \u2013 backed up by analysis of ocean sediments that tell a tale of changing temperatures and greenhouse gas levels \u2013 show that before the century\u2019s close the world will become warmer than at any time in the last three million years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time planetary temperatures reached a level higher than the target&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">set by 195 nations in Paris in 2015<\/a>was during a bygone geological period,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ucmp.berkeley.edu\/tertiary\/pliocene.php\">the Pliocene<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems we are now pushing our home planet beyond any climatic conditions experienced during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/prehistoric-world\/quaternary\/\">the entire current geological period, the Quaternary<\/a>,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pik-potsdam.de\/members\/willeit\">Matteo Willeit of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cOur results imply a strong sensitivity of the Earth system to relatively small changes in atmospheric CO2. As fascinating as this is, it is also worrying\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA period that started almost three million years ago and saw human civilisation beginning only 11,000 years ago.
