Officials briefly closed part of City Hall after reporting that rodents had invaded the building.<\/p><p>People&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/homeless\/infectious-disease-oubreaks-in-seattle-homeless-people-concern-health-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Washington state<\/a>&nbsp;have been infected with&nbsp;<em>Shigella<\/em>&nbsp;bacteria, which is spread through feces and causes the diarrheal disease shigellosis, as well as&nbsp;<em>Bartonella quintana,<\/em>&nbsp;which spreads through body lice and causes trench fever.<\/p><p>Hepatitis A, also spread primarily through feces, infected more than 1,000 people in Southern California in the past two years. The disease&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hepatitis\/outbreaks\/2017March-HepatitisA.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also has erupted<\/a>&nbsp;in New Mexico, Ohio and Kentucky, primarily among people who are homeless or use drugs. (<a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/medieval-diseases-flare-as-unsanitary-living-conditions-proliferate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">source<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>These diseases will eventually spread to the public.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the outbreaks are occurring primarily among the homeless, public health officials warn that these diseases can easily spread outside of that population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terms like \u201cdisaster\u201d and \u201cpublic health crisis\u201d are being used to describe the outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his State of the State speech in February, California Governor Gavin Newsom&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/medieval-diseases-flare-as-unsanitary-living-conditions-proliferate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>, \u201cOur homeless crisis is increasingly becoming a public health crisis,\u201d citing outbreaks of hepatitis A in San Diego County, syphilis in Sonoma County, and typhus in Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTyphus,\u201d he said. \u201cA medieval disease.
