{"id":45066,"date":"2019-04-05T08:01:13","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T13:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45066"},"modified":"2019-04-05T08:01:16","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T13:01:16","slug":"on-health-of-the-great-barrier-reef-and-case-of-sacked-scientist-peter-ridd-sky-news-creates-alternate-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=45066","title":{"rendered":"On Health of the Great Barrier Reef and Case of Sacked Scientist Peter Ridd, Sky News Creates Alternate Reality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2019\/04\/04\/great-barrier-reef-sacked-scientist-peter-ridd-sky-news-ipa\">On Health of the Great Barrier Reef and Case of Sacked Scientist Peter Ridd, Sky News Creates Alternate Reality<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/ridd%20ipatv%20grab.jpg?itok=-OqyD1VY\" alt=\"Peter Ridd\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s Great Barrier Reef is in some serious trouble, with the latest research in the journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-019-1081-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature<\/a>&nbsp;showing the number of new corals has dropped by 89&nbsp;percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016 and 2017, the reef was smashed by back-to-back mass bleaching events and heat stress caused by global warming that killed about half the&nbsp;corals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDead corals don\u2019t make babies,\u201d said James Cook University\u2019s Professor Terry Hughes, the paper\u2019s lead&nbsp;author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe used to think that the Great Barrier Reef was too big to fail \u2014 until now,\u201d added colleague Professor Morgan&nbsp;Pratchett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper was just the latest in a steady and, many would agree, depressing parade of findings for the World Heritage icon.&nbsp;And if the scientific papers don\u2019t do it for you, then there are always the&nbsp;pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the release of the study served as a remarkable contrast to the way the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sky News, furnished with material from climate science denial think tank the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/institute-public-affairs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Public Affairs<\/a>, has been \u201creporting\u201d on reef science in the past&nbsp;week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On at least five occasions the channel has interviewed the&nbsp;IPA\u2019s policy director Gideon Rozner, who has been updating the channel on the case of Dr.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/peter-ridd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Ridd<\/a>, a marine scientist specializing in sediments who was fired in March 2018 from James Cook&nbsp;University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the various interviews, the reef is in great shape, the science is probably wrong, and Ridd is a \u201cworld renowned\u201d reef expert in a historic fight for freedom.\u00a0None of this is true, yet the claims have been allowed to stand\u00a0unchecked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Health of the Great Barrier Reef and Case of Sacked Scientist Peter Ridd, Sky News Creates Alternate Reality Australia\u2019s Great Barrier Reef is in some serious trouble, with the latest research in the journal&nbsp;Nature&nbsp;showing the number of new corals has dropped by 89&nbsp;percent.
