In late 2017, actor Morgan Freeman announced in a video <\/a>created<\/a> by a who\u2019s who of senior U.S. Intelligence officials<\/a> that Russia had attacked the United States and that \u2018we\u2019 were at war. Freeman, whose net worth is said to be about a quarter-billion dollars<\/a>, claimed that ex-Soviet \u2018authoritarian\u2019 Vladimir Putin, bitter about the dissolution of \u2018his\u2019 country, was behind the attack. The terms \u2018attack\u2019 and \u2018war\u2019 were not qualified as metaphors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crudeness of the appeal\u2014 provoking naked fear of invading hordes of godless communists led by an evil dictator, had a retro quality that undid thirty years of technocratic upgrading of American agitprop Where is the Reagan-era Patrick Swayze packing a grenade launcher<\/a> when you need him? Or going back a bit further in agitprop history, where is Kevin McCarthy with a panicked warning about your neighbors<\/a> going to sleep as good Americans and waking up as communistsstooges of the Kremlin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within weeks of Donald Trump\u2019s electoral victory the \u2018true American\u2019 press, in the form of the Washington Post,\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that it had a list of\u00a0known communists who had infiltrated the U.S. government<\/a>\u00a0political websites that were acting as witting or unwitting agents of the Kremlin, current company included. One could be forgiven for imagining that the \u2018authoritarian\u2019 Donald Trump was behind the smear. \u00a0But no\u2014 it\u00a0appears to have been<\/a>\u00a0Ukrainian \u2018patriots\u2019 with ties to both the Democratic Party leadership and\u00a0actual European Nazis<\/a>that struck this blow for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom through censorship might seem an odd construct until it is understood that Kremlin agents are everywhere. By 2017, my friends from New York were suddenly afraid to venture out of Manhattan for fear of encountering a \u2018Trump voter.\u2019 (This is true). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
