{"id":44912,"date":"2019-03-30T12:57:51","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T17:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44912"},"modified":"2019-03-30T12:57:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T17:57:53","slug":"a-year-of-silencing-julian-assange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44912","title":{"rendered":"A Year of Silencing Julian Assange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2019\/03\/28\/a-year-of-silencing-julian-assange\/\">A Year of Silencing Julian Assange<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>O<\/strong>ne year ago Thursday, Ecuador\u2019s government under President Lenin Moreno silenced Julian Assange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WikiLeaks wrote on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/lra84\">Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;Wednesday: \u201c\u2026 March 28, marks one year that&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>publisher Julian Assange has been illegally gagged from doing journalism\u2014any writing that expresses a \u2018political opinion\u2019? even on his own treatment, after pressure from the U.S. on Ecuador.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this date in 2018 Moreno imposed on Assange what Human Rights Watch\u2019s legal counsel Dinah Pokempner&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/kNgry#selection-3513.193-3520.0\">described<\/a>&nbsp;as looking \u201cmore and more like solitary confinement.\u201d Moreno cut off Assange\u2019s online access and restricted visitors to the Ecuador embassy in London where Assange has had legal political asylum since 2012.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreno cited Assange\u2019s critical social media remarks about Ecuador\u2019s allies, the U.S. and Spain. Assange\u2019s near-total isolation, with the exception of visits from legal counsel during week days, has been augmented by the Ecuadorian government\u2019s imposition of a complex&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/SDqSE\">protocol<\/a>,\u201d&nbsp;which, although eased slightly in recent months in respect of visits allowed, has not improved Assange\u2019s overall status over the last 12 months. In some respects, it seems to have worsened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Whitehouse.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Whitehouse.jpg\" alt=\"Truck in D.C. (Pamela Drew, Twitter) \" class=\"wp-image-34601\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Truck in D.C.,March 28, 2019.&nbsp;(Pamela Drew, Twitter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WikiLeaks\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/8G8ZN#selection-507.2-507.656\">Courage Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;described the terms of the protocol:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cExplicit threats to revoke Julian\u2019s asylum if he, or any visitors, breach or are perceived to breach, any of the 28 \u2018rules\u2019 in the protocol. The \u2018protocol\u2019 forbids Julian from undertaking journalism and expressing his opinions, under threat of losing his asylum. The rules also state that the embassy can seize Julian\u2019s property or his visitors\u2019 property and hand these to the UK police, and report visitors to the UK authorities.
