{"id":44896,"date":"2019-03-29T19:19:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T00:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44896"},"modified":"2019-03-29T19:24:03","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T00:24:03","slug":"court-battles-reveal-fundamental-incoherence-in-trudeaus-climate-policies-says-campaigner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44896","title":{"rendered":"Court Battles Reveal \u2018Fundamental Incoherence\u2019 in Trudeau\u2019s Climate Policies, Says Campaigner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/03\/29\/BC-Climate-Leadership-Fundamental-Incoherence\/\">Court Battles Reveal \u2018Fundamental Incoherence\u2019 in Trudeau\u2019s Climate Policies, Says Campaigner<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ottawa praises BC\u2019s green leadership, while fighting provincial legal case on Trans Mountain expansion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/03\/28\/TrudeauNotleySeated.jpg\" alt=\"TrudeauNotleySeated.jpg\"\/><figcaption>Justin Trudeau\u2019s government welcomes BC\u2019s support on carbon tax, but is siding with Alberta\u2019s Rachel Notley in fighting against BC\u2019s right to regulate oil shipments.&nbsp;Photo from Alberta government.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal government\u2019s treatment of British Columbia shows the Trudeau Liberals\u2019 \u201cincoherence\u201d on climate change, says an environmental campaigner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On one hand, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is calling B.C. an \u201cexemplary climate leader\u201d on Twitter, because the provincial government supports its carbon tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/03\/28\/CatherineMcKennaClimateLeaderTweet.jpg\" alt=\"582px version of CatherineMcKennaClimateLeaderTweet.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the Trudeau government is fighting to force the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion through B.C. over the provincial government\u2019s objections and accusing B.C. of hurting the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2019\/03\/28\/JustinTrudeauTMXPipelineTweet.jpg\" alt=\"582px version of JustinTrudeauTMXPipelineTweet.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, B.C. is involved in three court cases concerning environmental issues that involve the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In two, the province is intervening in support of the federal government to argue in favour of a national carbon tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the third, B.C. is asking if it has the right to control what hazardous materials come across its borders, which could give it the ability to block the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conflicting legal cases show a basic problem with the federal government\u2019s climate change policies, Dogwood BC campaigner Sophie Harrison told The Tyee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt speaks to the fundamental incoherence in the federal government\u2019s climate change policies,\u201d she said. \u201cOut of one side of their mouth they are talking about leading on climate, they are talking about making polluters pay for climate damages&#8230; and out of the other side of their mouth they pay oil companies to pollute.
