{"id":44791,"date":"2019-03-26T07:48:13","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T12:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44791"},"modified":"2019-03-26T07:48:16","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T12:48:16","slug":"rcmps-social-media-surveillance-symptom-of-broad-threat-to-privacy-says-bccla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44791","title":{"rendered":"RCMP\u2019s Social Media Surveillance Symptom of Broad Threat to Privacy, Says BCCLA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/03\/26\/RCMP-Surveillance-Threat-Privacy\/\">RCMP\u2019s Social Media Surveillance Symptom of Broad Threat to Privacy, Says BCCLA<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Micheal Vonn isn\u2019t surprised by RCMP\u2019s \u2018Project Wide Awake\u2019 \u2014 but she\u2019s worried.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/03\/25\/AppIcons.jpg\" alt=\"AppIcons.jpg\"\/><figcaption>\u2018For most people, to hear that the police may be collecting their social media offerings for analysis \u2014 for future crime \u2014&nbsp;is pretty shocking.\u2019&nbsp;Photo from Pixabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising the RCMP is using sophisticated software to monitor the social media activities of Canadians, said Micheal Vonn, policy director of the BC Civil Liberties Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is worrying, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday The Tyee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2019\/03\/25\/Project-Wide-Awake\/\">revealed<\/a>&nbsp;the existence of the RCMP\u2019s \u201cProject Wide Awake,\u201d which monitors the social media activities of Canadians on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program\u2019s expansion last year with sophisticated monitoring software appears to undermine the RCMP\u2019s 2017 claim to the federal Privacy Commissioner that the project\u2019s surveillance was \u201creactive\u201d \u2014 done to gather information after a crime was committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation is now monitoring people\u2019s online activities to see if they might commit a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not surprised, but only because I spend a lot of time in this world,\u201d said Vonn. \u201cFor most people, to hear that the police may be collecting their social media offerings for analysis, for future crime,&nbsp;is pretty shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we\u2019ve been heading in this direction for decades, Vonn said.
