{"id":44588,"date":"2019-03-19T18:55:32","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T23:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44588"},"modified":"2019-03-19T18:55:37","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T23:55:37","slug":"the-coming-wave-of-high-tech-authoritarianism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=44588","title":{"rendered":"The Coming Wave Of High-Tech Authoritarianism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dollarcollapse.com\/high-tech-authoritarianism\/\">The Coming Wave Of High-Tech Authoritarianism<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of history\u2019s hard lessons is that collapsing financial systems beget authoritarian politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s world, alas, is following this script, as rising debts lead to wrenching political changes in nearly every country that holds free elections, while fascism and socialism are once again being taken seriously by people who in normal times would inhabit the political center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s one big difference this time around: the advanced state of social control technology. Past governments, when trying to tamp down dissent, were limited to blunt-instrument policies like curfews, phone taps and press shutdowns. Today\u2019s would-be Big Brothers can do vastly more, and in many cases will use the coming financial\/political emergency as an excuse to place&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/george_orwell_159438\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orwell\u2019s proverbial boot<\/a>&nbsp;on their citizens\u2019 necks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples from a recent Wall Street Journal article titled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-autocrats-new-tool-kit-11552662637?mod=searchresults&amp;page=1&amp;pos=1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Autocrat\u2019s New Tool Kit:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u2022 Chinese authorities are now using the tools of big data to detect departures from \u201cnormal\u201d behavior among Muslims in the country\u2019s Xinjiang region\u2014and then to identify each supposed deviant for further state attention.&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u2022 The Egyptian government plans to relocate from Cairo later this year to a still-unnamed new capital that will have, as the project\u2019s spokesman put it, \u201ccameras and sensors everywhere,\u201d with \u201ca command center to control the entire city.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u2022 Moscow already has some 5,000 cameras installed with facial-recognition technology, and it can match faces of interest to photos from passport databases, police files and social media.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But scary as these things sound, they\u2019re crude compared to what\u2019s coming. From the same WSJ article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMicrotargeting\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>enables governments to build personality assessments of citizens and tailor propaganda for targets\u2019 psychological weak spots. Russia\u2019s Internet Research Agency reportedly harvested data from Facebook to craft specific messages for individual voters during the 2016 US presidential race.
