Though it had no impact on the pre-industrial and pre-technological world, such an event today would trigger widespread power outages and collapse communication and navigation systems. In short, modern society would come to a screeching halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/geo%20storm_0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/geo%20storm_0.jpg?itok=KmD_11Po\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study titled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2019\/03\/05\/1815725116\">Multiradionuclide evidence for an extreme solar proton event around 2,610 B.P. (\u223c660 BC)<\/a>&nbsp;was published online March 11 in&nbsp;Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead author Raimund Muscheler, a professor of Quaternary Sciences at Lund University in Sweden, said&nbsp;a burst of solar energy from the sun could&nbsp;<strong>overwhelm&nbsp;power grids, air travel, and disrupt satellite communications&nbsp;if this were to happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Today, we have a lot of infrastructures that could be badly damaged, and we travel in air and space where we are much more exposed to high-energy radiation,&#8221; Muscheler told LiveScience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/solar%20storm_0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/solar%20storm_0.jpg?itok=rqVOqKq1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers analyzed ice cores from Greenland to uncover the mystery of Earth&#8217;s most powerful solar storms.
